So let me tell you about the shittiest parent on the motherfucking planet.

I work at a grocery store and this man comes in with his 11 year old son. He buys a pack a cigarettes and a two cases of beer. The son was holding a two dollar drawing pad and placed it on the belt and I guess the dad didn’t notice it at first but when I was about to scan the pad he asked where’d it have come from and turned towards the kid and asked “Did you put that shit up there?”. He told me to put it back and then told his 11 year old child that he “ain’t paying for that gay ass notebook.”. So I looked at the kid, who was close to tears and saying how he ran out of paper at home and my heart broke. So I gave the pad to him, for free, and told the dad I would take care of it. I gave the kid some tokens for a game outside and said I would look forward to buying some of his drawings and paintings when he’s all famous. He kids face was so priceless and I thought everything was good. But then, about 10 ten minutes after giving the kid his notebook, I walked outside and saw this. The drawing pad all ripped up and tossed on the pavement. I could only imagine what happened in the parking lot, but I know that that poor kid heart is fucking ripped apart, just like this pad.

I’m fucking horrified that there are parents like this, who, just because it’s not masculine or gender specificthey won’t let their children follow their true passions or explore interests that lead to their happiness. Even more so, I’m horrified that parents don’t care about the fine arts anymore because it doesn’t have job security. Since when did it ever matter to a child if their passion makes them money or not? Parenting is about supporting whatever makes your child happy. Have some fucking consideration for your child’s wants not your homophobic and anti-art ideals.

Okay, I’m sorry, I guess I’m in socially justice blogger mode tonight, but do you really think that the father’s gender-based anti-art attitude was really the problem there? I acknowledge the fact that it is a part of the problem, but I think you’re being a little naive in this situation.

As someone who grew up in an abusive household, it seems very clear to me that is exactly what was going on. It’s hard for me to imagine how you might perceive this situation, but it obviously very different from my perception. This wasn’t about art, this wasn’t about the notebook. This was a case when a father, who was most likely an alcoholic, swears at and demeans his child in a manner indicative of emotional abuse. Then you walk out in the parking lot and see the notebook torn up, and it only occurs to you that the father really didn’t want his child to draw because it’s “gay” and “impractical.” But let me promise you, if the father was angry enough to rip a pad of paper in half, he was certainly angry enough to shout at and attack his child. In my experiences of living in an abusive household, I was almost never seriously attacked, but, like this child, I was often shouted at or harshly grabbed when the abuser in my household was angry about something. Trust me, it’s enough to count as abuse, and it’s certainly enough to cause lasting damage (I’ve had to stop and start writing this multiple times because my hands were shaking to bad and I started having panic attacks). The only reason I’m even a little bit okay today is because we finally broke the cycle and got out of the abusive situation.

It’s just really upsetting me to imagine what might have happened to that kid since you’ve seen him, and remember all of the times that I was younger when someone like you didn’t even realize what was going on. I’m not trying to blame you for the fact that it didn’t occur to you that there might have been a deeper underlying problem, and I’m really sorry if you take this personally and get upset about it for the wrong reasons.

I think that this is more of an issue that people aren’t really educated about how to recognize actual signs of abuse. After all, (I’m assuming) this child showed no outward signs of abuse, no injuries. And he wasn’t openly terrified shitless of his father, and he wasn’t begging for help. Domestic violence can often be very subtle, and either goes unnoticed or unreported.

Hell, even if it is reported, the abuser is almost never convicted. We had the police come multiple times while I was in an abusive household, but the cops would always end up just talking to the abuser for a few minutes before leaving. I’ve seen this happen to others as well. One one occasion, my mom was out on a date with her current husband (the first and only non-abusive one) and saw a young couple where the boyfriend/husband was shouting at the girlfriend/wife in the parking lot and she was sobbing and he was trying to physically force her into his vehicle. My mom called the cops and tried to make sure he didn’t hurt the girl in the mean time. The cops came, talked to the boy, not even glancing at the sobbing and trembling girl he had forced into the passenger seat, and left without even taking down any information.

So, obviously this is a problem larger than just not noticing that maybe a father isn’t just against drawing and is instead actually abusive. This is a deep-rooted problem in society where domestic violence is not correctly taught about, is not noticed, and is actively ignored by people with the power to do something about it.

Again, I’m sorry for taking this out on you because it isn’t really you that is at fault for anything. But I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t stop to say something. Because even if only one person takes the time to read this, at least that one person might be at least a little bit more prepared to notice a potentially abusive situation, or at least do a little more research on their own since this rant was just a jumble of text from someone who is emotionally disturbed.

These guys go up to girls they don’t know, begin touching them in a really intimate manner without the girls’ permission, from behind (which, as many girls in the video point out, means they can’t see who is touching them), and then try to get the girls’ numbers. Most of the girls are visibly scared when first touched by the guys, gasping or saying “oh my god.” One guy even straddles a girl (1:39). The guys don’t ever ask if they can have the girls’ numbers, but say things like “so, I’m going to get your number.” You can also see some of the girls visibly do not want to give their numbers and hesitate (1:18), but do so anyways. The girls who do ask them to stop say things in timid voices like, “Do you mind stopping? Thank you” (2:24). Thank you.

At the end, as the finale to all these “funny” clips, they show a clip of a girl who is very freaked out by the guy. So much so, that she calls over two random guys to help her because she doesn’t know what to do (3:01). Note she says sorry to the guy (3:10). This guy touches her inappropriately without her permission, she has enough sense to do something about it, and then apologizes to the guy after she does nothing wrong.
